OBSEXED (IT)

PARAMOUNT STYLES (US) w/ Scott McCloud (voce/chitarra) e Alexis Fleisig (batteria) di Girls Against Boys e Soulside
Less noise was the new way… now giving way to more noise. Acoustic guitar, cello, more nuance, less bravado. Two records later and still experimenting by searching for a comfortable place between nice and not so nice. Thinking this would be a good way to deliver a mood and a message without hammering it into your head à la Girls Against Boys and Soulside, our earlier projects, but still opting for swagger and braggadocio – can it work? Scott McCloud sings and plays acoustic guitar and Alexis Fleisig plays drums with some fancy europeans and some rough and ready americans. The first record, Failure American Style, released sometime in 2008 found extreme critical success in my mind and some limited friends. The new record, Heaven’s Alright, is sweeping the charts of my mind, soaring to number 3, at least. I have high hopes for it – we will see. Carefully planning the release of the first record to time perfectly with the great financial crash of 2008, it seemed appropriate to release the second record at a relatively quiet point when most people realized they didn’t have enough money or a job and the future of the music industry was looking exceptionally bleak. There was also a 7.0 earthquake in Haiti, an 8.8 earthquake in Chile, a 6.9 earthquake in China, volcanic explosion of EyjafjallajÃkull in Iceland, the blowout of the BP Deepwater Horizon well and the bailout of Ireland and Greece, among other things. Hell of a year.

ELYSIAN FIELDS (USA)
Elysian Fields is an American band based in Brooklyn, New York, founded in 1995 by the co-composers Jennifer Charles (vocals, instruments) and Oren Bloedow (guitar). Their music has sometimes been described as "noir rock", due to its sultry, dark and mysterious inflections, be it sonically or lyrically. The band uses mainly acoustic instruments, predominantly guitar, piano, bass and drums, with the occasional appearance of eastern instruments, classical strings, and subtle electronics, the focal point being the voice of Charles in the forefront.
Based in New York City, Elysian Fields have found underground success in the United States but are more popular in Europe. The author of The Dark Stuff, Nick Kent, says of their music, "Maybe we have their out-of-the-mainstreamness to thank for a sound that is still unique -- as sensual as a sleepwalker's wet dream." Since its formation, the band has won quite a devoted cult following, largely by word of mouth. Besides its well received albums, the band is also noted for its strong live performances. The rest of the band has included many of New York's strongest players: all the members of Jeff Buckley's band, members of Medeski Martin and Wood, Ed Pastorini, Ben Perowsky, James Genus, Thomas Bartlett, Jamie Saft and members of Ollabelle have all played in Elysian Fields at various times.

MORNE (US)
The stylistic pyroclasm of MORNE's bleak, extreme but reachable metal did not happen overnight. Since their 2009 debut album, Untold Wait, the Boston-based four-piece have made simple categorizations like 'doom' or even 'metal' laughable, and their latest and fifth full-length, Engraved With Pain, refines their attack to a level toward which even 2018's To the Night Unknown could only hint.
Playing out across four chapters, the 40-minute album sees the veteran outfit - yes, all the festivals, including Roadburn, Hellfest, etc.; tours and tours and tours - crafting rhythmic tension and lung-squeezing atmospheres as Polish-born guitarist/vocalist Miłosz Gassan emits layered guttural shouts that speak to inner and outer crises. Engraved With Pain makes its title believable, and from its eponymous opener through "Memories Like Stone," "Wretched Empire" and "Fire and Dust," it carries humanity individually and collectively through the realities of its decline. As a species, it's hard to argue we didn't have it coming.
"'Wretched Empire' lyrically is my take on current situation in the world," says Gassan. "How divided everything is and how people are prone to being misled. How we forget our history. History that happened not that long ago. I never comment on my lyrics but maybe in this case it's needed. I call humanity a wretched empire. It's not an optimistic song."
Spacious, crushing, darkly thoughtful enough to be progressive but never so indulgent as to lose sight of its core message, Engraved With Pain was recorded with legendary producer Kurt Ballou at GodCity Studio in Salem, Massachusetts.
Gassan adds: "I think between music and lyrics this album carries a lot of weight which Kurt perfectly captured, I can say that we are very satisfied with it. A lot of energy was pushed into making it."
For MORNE, Engraved With Pain is a moment of grim triumph, as rooted in Celtic Frost as in Ministry, still somehow extrapolated from the gods Black Sabbath and characteristic of no one so much as themselves. A document that speaks directly to future historians looking back and wondering just where the hell it all went so wrong. Imagine a Rosetta Stone for the sixth great extinction.
Expect MORNE to spread this cruel, unflinchingly honest manifestation with foreign and domestic touring, as they continue to stake their position at the forefront of underground consciousness with the support of (also legendary) Metal Blade Records and their finest work to-date behind them.

THE ABBEY (FIN)
Drawing lyrical inspiration from esoteric organizations, their beliefs and own practices, Finnish music veteran Jesse Heikkinen and co-lead vocalist Natalie Koskinen (Shape of Despair) weaved ritualistic tales from the darkest corners of themselves to pair with music that is a provocative, alluring kaleidoscope of dark, heavy rock.
The result is the mystical ‘Word of Sin’, THE ABBEY’s first full-length. Featuring former Sentenced and The Man-Eating Tree drummer Vesa Ranta, Janne Markus (guitar, also of The Man-Eating Tree) and Henri Arvola (bass), the emerging progressive doom rock band’s debut album is certain to entrance and captivate the listeners with its spell.
